Mum has been diagnosed with lung and liver cancer three months after I lost best friend to cancer

Hi,

My beautiful mum has recently been diagnosed with lung and liver cancer aged 72, due to various issues with local services she’s awaiting more information on what stage the cancer is and what treatment (if any) she will require.

Having lost my best friend to breast cancer 3 months ago (I spent her final days with her during end of  life care)  I would really appreciate any advice on how to positively support my mum through whatever is to come, I’m struggling with the diagnosis as I’m still grieving the loss of my friend but trying to remain strong for our family.

Thanks

  • Hello Rio1303,

Poor you - how sad that you are having to go through this after having just lost your best friend to breast cancer. We are so sorry for your loss - losing a best friend can make us feel so lost especially as this is happening now to your mum and I hope that you have good support around you, other friends to talk to when you need to offload. I hope that your mum will get more information soon on what stage the cancer is exactly and what treatment options might be available to her. There is information on our website on lung cancer which may be useful to you as general guidelines until you find out all the details of your mum's diagnosis. When you do have all the details, if there is anything that is unclear and you would like to talk through, don't hesitate to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

It's hard to know what to do sometimes to support a loved one with cancer and it's not easy for you to keep strong especially as you are still mourning the loss of your best friend. Our information for Friends, Family and Caregivers will give you some good tips to support someone with cancer whilst not forgetting to take care of yourself. I hope this helps a little that I will be joined by other members of our community who have been in a similar place before - you are definitely not alone here and I will now let them come and say hello and share their story with you.

    Best wishes,
