Blood tests at home

My mum is 88 and has was diagnosed on Friday with bladder cancer after a CT scan. She had admitted she has had lots of symptoms listed and not told anyone, she wasn’t surprised by the diagnosis. She is really really poorly to the extent she can barely walk and sleeps all the time, doesn’t eat barely drinks and has lots so much weight. She will need to keep going for blood tests which are an hours car journey away, she worries about the journey. Is it possible for blood tests to be done at home or does it need to be taken in a hospital, I’m trying to save what little energy she has?

  • Good morning Annelee

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis. It's understandable that you want to make sure she doesn't have to spend any unnecessary energy and that she's as comfortable as possible.

Please do speak to the team responsible for your Mum's care about your concerns, including the worries you've mentioned in your other post about the length of time that she's sleeping and her lack of eating and drinking. If you can't get hold of the care team, speak to her GP.

If you are at all concerned about over the festive period then don't hesitate to contact NHS 111 who can advise and if necessary arrange for a Dr to call. You can also call 999 in an emergency.

Sending you both my best wishes,
