We don't know if my mother (in her mid 90s) has cancer: what should we look out for?

My mother is in her mid 90s.   She has severe pain all over her body due to a variety of issues relating to her spine.  She has complained of excruciating pain in her abdomen and lower abdomen for several years, which has been getting worse.   The GP went down the urological route, but scans and ultrasounds revealed nothing.  The doctors say her stomach is soft and they can’t feel a mass.   About 15 months ago a stool test showed blood and she was referred.  Before we could make an appointment, she was admitted to hospital because of an infection and the doctors told me they had seen several shadows and that she might have cancer but at her age they didn’t want to do invasive tests.  She has excess calcium and has been diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism as well as poor kidney function.

We therefore don’t know if she has cancer or not and will not find out.   However, she has been losing weight recently, doesn’t want to eat as much as before and says the pain is terrible.   Doctors have tried morphine, tramadol and other pain killers, but they don’t seem to help.  She now just takes codeine and paracetamol.

What symptoms should I be looking out for and what might indicate to me that it is a form of cancer?

  • Hello Enquiring,

I am so sorry to hear about your mum's situation - poor her she seems to be in intense pain and it must be really hard for you and those around her to see her losing weight, not eat very much and be in such pain. I can completely understand your need for answers as it must be tough to see your mum like this without knowing for sure whether she has cancer or not. It sounds like with her being in her mid 90s, doctors are a bit reluctant to put her through too many invasive tests and treatment but I hope that they can find a way to help her feel a bit better and that they can find the right painkillers for her.

It's difficult to know really what symptoms to look out for which might indicate a form of cancer as there are over 200 different types of cancer which can present various symptoms - our website has interesting information on cancer signs and symptoms and it will give some insight into what to look out for. If you would like to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses or have any questions about cancer, feel free to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope you won't mind but I have slightly changed the title of your post to provide a little more context so that our members can spot it more easily and share any relevant experience with you.

We're thinking of your mum during this difficult time and I hope that you get to enjoy some quality time together this Christmas and that her appetite improves too.

    Best wishes,
