Bad side effects from radiotherapy

Hello, I'm new to the forum.

A week ago my mum (aged 90) finished 30 days of radiotherapy for vulval cancer. Now she has very severe diarrhoea, is really sore and totally exhausted.

The diarrhoea is particularly demoralising and uncontrollable. We were told this would happen but the reality is proving very difficult to deal with.

Can we expect things to improve? I feel like I'm watching her deteriorate daily

  • Hello detta

I'm so sorry to hear that your Mum is really struggling with the side effects following her recent radiotherapy treatment. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious and worried about her.

The side effects of radiotherapy can sometimes continue to worsen for a short while after treatment ends. However if your Mum is still struggling then please do get in touch with her GP or the clinical nurse specialist if your Mum has been given one. Naturally you don't want Mum to become dehydrated with the side effects she is experiencing and end up with further problems so give them a call as soon as you're able too. If necessary then don't be afraid to call NHS 111 outside of normal GP surgery hours.

I do hope that things settle for you Mum soon.

    Best wishes,
