Choosing a treatment

My dad has been diagnosed with stage 4 prostrate Cancer, it has spread to bones and lung. PSA level over 1000 and he has started HT. He has been on it for almost 3 months and we have an appointment next Friday to choose the next treatment plan. HT has reduced PSA and the last blood test showed it down to 100.
I have tons of questions and it is super hard to know what treatment to choose.
The consultation has said that a new drug… I forget the name would be a better option than Chemotherapy but all the internet searches say chemo and dirolutamide  lengthen life.
My dad doesn’t want to know his prognosis, so it’s very hard to make any decisions. The nurse has indicated that it’s years not months.

  • Hello Erin1975

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's recent diagnosis. It's good to hear that the hormone therapy has successfully reduced his PSA and that the specialist has been able to recommend further treatment options.

It's understandable that you have lots of questions and want to make sure that the right decision is made about the next phase of your Dad's treatment. We know that many people turn to the internet for information at times like this. It's important to remember that lots of what you read online isn't always the most up-to-date information available so do discuss your concerns and queries with the Oncologist.

You might find it helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses ahead of that appointment. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support they can along with helping you think about the questions that you want to ask the specialists. You might also find it helpful to have a look at the Prostate Cancer UK website.

I hope that your Dad's appointment goes smoothly next week and that the Specialists are able to offer you both some reassurance.

Do keep in touch and let us know how things go.

    Best wishes,
