PV Itching symptoms - any tips to help?

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with Polycythemia Vera around a year ago. The treatment is thankfully going very well, and my blood readings are in a good place. But the main physical symptom I have is skin itching, which I know is common with this cancer type. Prior to diagnosis it was the classic post hot bath or shower. But now it happens daily, and with no specific triggers. I know it sounds like a small symptom in the grand scheme of things, but is pretty extreme.

I was wondering if anyone has some tips to deal with it? I am using standard antihistamine, but it doesn't seem to help.

Many thanks for any helpful tips.

I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with pruritus after being diagnosed with PV last year. Extreme itching can be a really debilitating symptom.

It's good to hear that your blood results are in a good place with the treatment regime that you've been recommended. Do discuss the itching with your care team so that they can continue to make sure that there is no other underlying cause for this symptom. There may also be medications or topical treatments that they're able to suggest to try and help manage things.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope that things settle for you soon.

    Best wishes,
