Advice please - will my husband get a sore mouth from chemoradiotherapy?

Hi,.

My husband is in his 4 th week of chemoradiotherapy, he does have a sore throat, which is being well treated by morphine and pregablin, he seems to be doing well, but, I have a question, his mouth isn't sore at all, will that come later or might it not happen?

Up to last week he actually lost weight, and the consultant said if he loses any this week, he will have a feed tube, that has soured him on, so, has been forcing himself to eat, weighed today, he h  actually put a little on!... the specialist was amazed..so, it's a happy day today

Thank youxxx

  • Hello worrywortme1,

Cancer treatment can affect everyone differently so not everyone will get the same side effects so hopefully he will not get the sore mouth - you could ask his specialist whether the sore mouth is a likely side effect or if he may avoid it altogether. Sorry to hear about the sore throat but I am glad it is being treated and he is doing well.

Fantastic news that he hasn't lost any more weight and that he has been eating more and he has put a little bit of weight on. Small victories like this are to be celebrated (perhaps with a nice calorific treat!) so I am glad today was a happy day and that he managed to avoid having a feed tube.

If you have any questions about treatment side effects or anything that springs to your mind, our nurses are available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so don't hesitate to give them a call.

Hopefully you will hear from others who have been in a similar situation and they will come and share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,

  • OOh,

chemo is tough, not sure what he is on.  i was given mouth wash which helped and will have a look to send you. I lost weight and drank milk shakes - chemo made me feel so ill and i really didn't want to eat, but they kept on the weight - important you keep up calories to help heal - happy to chat.

    good luck !
