Hair loss support

Hello,

My aunt has lymphoma and had a few monthly 2 day chemo treatments and starting to lose her hair. She doesn’t want people to know she is unwell including me - she also has mild dementia or similar and doesn’t always remember she is ill. I don’t think she really understands what is happening to her hair and I don’t really know how to deal with this. I am starting to say “is it the medicine?” when she says she is losing her hair. I am stuck between trying to respect her privacy but it’s becoming unavoidable to discuss this. Is all hair likely to fall out in the next few weeks? It is a continuous loss of hair fall at the moment a few every 15 minutes. All complicated by the fact she doesn’t want to talk about it or really remember what’s going on. Her husband is struggling and can’t talk about it either. I think there is a nurse that calls regularly but I think she doesn’t remember what is happening so I am worried that they are not getting support from that either. Sorry for the confused email. A lot going on and don’t know how to help.

Thanks for reading.

  • Hello SunnyTree,

I'm sorry to hear about your aunt and how this is affecting you and her husband. It's important that he reminds the nurse of what's happening, that you're both having difficulty getting your aunt to process this and may need extra support. You may be able to get a better idea from the nurse of how much hair she could lose, but it can vary. There is some advice on coping with hair loss, as well as coping as a carer. Also there are organisations like Look Good Feel Better that offer styling workshops, which might bring some normality for your aunt. There is help out there so I hope this helps in some way and we have a team of cancer nurses if you'd like to speak to someone. You can call them on the freephone 0808 800 4040 and lines are open 9 to 5 Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes to you,

  • My friend was diagnosed and didn’t want everyone to know either . We went to a wig shop and she had a wig that looked like the hair she had . Maybe that would help xx
