Muscle invasive bladder cancer

I am caring for my 91 year old husband who three months ago had a 4cm tumour removed from his bladder - unfortunately they couldn't remove all of it as 20% was wrapped around the ureter and now three months later the whole tumour has returned. He will be given some palliative radiotherapy in the next few weeks.  I just don't know what to expect and should have asked more questions of the consultant.  If anyone has experience or advice I would be so grateful. I must add that my husband also suffers from dementia which has also given him Parkinsonism.  That said, we enjoy a happy life and so far he has not had any pain.  I am just worried about what the future may hold.

  • Hello J63,

I am so sorry your husband's tumour has returned and he will be given palliative radiotherapy in the next few weeks. Our website has detailed information about palliative radiotherapy which I hope you will find useful. Perhaps you could try and speak to his consultant if you feel there are more questions that spring to your mind?

I hope that you will hear from other members of our forum who have had experience of palliative radiotherapy for bladder cancer and that they will be along shortly to share their story with you. It's really hard to have to deal with this at the same time as dementia and Parkinson's - you are I am sure an amazing source of support for your husband and I am so pleased that you are enjoying a happy life with your husband despite everything you are going through and that he has not had any pain so far. It's normal in your situation to be worried about what the future may hold and to want to be prepared - talking to his medical team will help and don't hesitate to ask them questions.

Our cancer nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if there is anything you would like to ask them or talk to them about.

    Best wishes,
