Caring for mum

I have a 92 year old mum with a fungating breast cancer, throat cancer and skin cancer. She also has type 1 diabetes, COPD and asthma and at the end of May she fell and broke her shoulder. She was in hospital for four weeks and sent home with a 4 x a day care package which after just 2 weeks the care company assessed that she was able to cope on her own going to bed! Is there anyone who might point me in the right direction with getting mum care in her own home please? I work full time and the days off I do have I go and help her out but quite frankly I am exhausted and feel like I'm losing the plot. Any advice welcome,.

  • A very warm welcome to the Cancer Chat community Sally although I'm so sorry to hear about your mum. She's been through so much and I can't begin to imagine how you must have felt when the care company's assessment came through.

Thankfully, we have some information about the different types of support that is available at home for you and your mum but if you'd like to discuss any of this further with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m -5p.m. They're very informative and will do all they can to help.

So many of our members know how challenging being a carer can be, so you are not alone, and hopefully you will receive some support and advice from them soon.

I hope this information we have for carers will prove useful as well.

We're thinking of you Sally and will have our fingers crossed you're able to get the care your mum needs that will benefit you both at this time.

    Kind regards,
