How to keep spirits up?

My mums figuring cancer for the second time. I was still really young the first time and don't remember it much but I'm older now and am doing my best to support my mum during her breast cancer journey. She's responding well to the treatment but has down days so I was wondering what you do to keep your spirits up and give yourself that extra boost of positivity?

Because the weather's been nicer I've been taking mum out in to the garden and she's enjoyed that but lacks energy to do too much. I'm trying to find new ways to keep her spirits up.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Brooke23 although I'm sorry to hear your mum is battling cancer for a second time. This must be very tough for the both of you but I'm sure your mum really appreciates you being by her side and doing all you can to support her.

I'm sure some of our members will share their tips and advice with you soon but in the meantime, I hope some of the ideas given in our family, friends and caregivers section of our website will help.

You're also welcome to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses on 0808 800 4040 between 9a.m - 5p.m. They'll be back on Tuesday, after the bank holiday weekend is over.

We're thinking of you Brooke and sending all our strength and positivity your way.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Steph,

Thank you for your reply and for the link I think this will be really helpful for me and my mum.

It's been a good weekend, mum has been in high spirits though a bit more tired today but I'm hoping she'll have a better day again tomorrow. I think the warmer brighter weather has helped.

Thanks for replying I really appreciate you taking the time to help.

    King regards,

    Brooke

  • Hi there Brooke23, I'm sorry to hear about your mum. It must be a such a boost for her mentally to have you around for company and support.

My dad had bowel cancer many years ago and had down days. He used to enjoy listening to audio books with us because it didn't require too much effort. We also put a bird feeder out as he liked watching the birds. Crosswords were another thing he liked to do with us to keep his mind occupied.

All the best to you and your mum xx
