SCLC Extensive - No Symtoms

Hi everyone.

My dad had a ct scan back in November where a mass was detected in his lung and shadows in his lymph nodes.

Unfortunately the hospital lost the results and it was until March (after chasing for months) that the results were acted on.

The follow up tests showed that by then the cancer had spread to my dad's spine and hip as well as more lymph nodes.

The biopsy showed that the cancer is small cell lung cancer.

My dad has declined chemotherapy and at the appointment on 22nd March was told he may have a couple of months but may only have weeks to live.

Since then we have discovered the cancer has spread to his eye (you can actually see the mass in his iris).

The thing is, my dad is really well. He's still doing DIY and cleaning the house (carpets included!) and we are already at 6 weeks today since the diagnosis.

What I'm wondering is if anyone has been through the same thing and experienced someone being well like this with this type of cancer (first detected 6 months ago) and if I should prepare myself for a sudden and dramatic decline?

Thanks everyone

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, Sarah.

I'm sorry to hear that your dad was diagnosed with cancer that has now spread to other parts of his body but I'm glad that he's still doing well and going on about his days as before.

I had a quick look on the forum to see if there was anyone posting about caring for someone with small cell lung cancer but couldn't find anything recent. That being said, we do have information on our website about this type of cancer which I'm including here in case this is something that can be useful.

The other thing I wanted to mention is that our team of nurses are ready to chat with you if speaking with someone who comes from a medical background may help. They're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on this freephone 0808 800 4040.

    I hope this helps, Sarah.

All the best to you and your dad,

    Renata, Cancer Chat Moderator

I don’t really have knowledge to share as my dad has recently been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer.  I just wanted to let you know I am thinking of you and hope, whatever the situation, that you’re ok.
