Dad has terminal bladder cancer - can’t eat/ drink

Hi guys,

Dad has terminal bladder cancer (previously bowel cancer has a stoma bag) he was comfortable at home but in the last few weeks has had to be admitted to a&e twice which is totally exhausting for him. Tummy pain and swelling. Was given a drip for dehydration which was what affected his stoma bag to not work & cause pain.
was admitted again at the weekend and is still on a drip for dehydration he can barley eat or drink himself anymore (loss of appetite/ vomiting) hospital told us to take him home today but we told them he will be back there within hours again as he will be dehydrated again so they let him stay this eve.

They have told us the won't provide any IV drip at home and are super eager to discharge him asap - not sure what happens now if he comes home we are back to square one probably another trip to A&E.

Nurse said she would get home set up with hospital bed , district nurse visits and so forth.. but it still doesn't solve the issue. What next hospice ?
im so exhausted and left searching for answers

love to all

  • Hello Caroline99

I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad's diagnosis and the situation that you all find yourselves in. It's obviously an incredibly difficult time for you all and certainly no good for your Dad or anyone else in the family that he's yo-yo-ing back and forth to A&E.

Has your Dad been referred to the palliative care team? It's worth telling the ward that you're not prepared to take your Dad home without a proper discussion about his care and that you want to speak with the palliative care team before that happens. The priority now should be to ensure that he's comfortable and that he has the right care plan in place. Whether that is at home or in a hospice is something to discuss with the palliative care team and of course your Dad.

If you'd like to chat with our nurses before speaking to the hospital then please do give them a call for some advice and support. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that you're able to get some rest tonight and that tomorrow you're able to work with the hospital to get a proper, supportive discharge plan in place for your Dad.

    Best wishes,
