My mum has non small cell lung cancer

My mum who is a healthy 67 year old woman . Well was . Was diagnosed June 2021 with non small cell lung cancer. She has it in both lungs , lymph nodes, spine , breast bone. She was having chemo maintenance but they have stopped that and there is a tumour they can't get too that is slowly growing on lung.

She has had a permanent drain fitted to collect the fluid. A nurse will now come weekly to drain . She had a litre drained within a week. She has swollen ankles and been told to rest. I am unsure what to think as she has been trying to carry on as normal. She has her partner with her. Is this a sign she will get worse or just part of the ups and downs?

I am trying to keep it from my children for as long as possiobeo as we are all so close but I feel I will have to tell my odlerst two who are late teens but don't want to until i really have to !?

  • A very warm welcome to Cancer Chat Greeneyes although I'm very sorry to hear about your mum and that her chemo maintenance has now been stopped.

This must be very difficult for you all but I hope it helps to know that our community are here for you and hopefully some of our members who have been on this journey will be along soon to share their experiences and advice.

I know you mentioned that you may need to tell your eldest children about this soon so I just wanted to share some information and guidance we have on talking to children about cancer. I hope it helps but if you'd like to discuss this and/or your mum's situation with one of our cancer nurses, they're just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they'll do all they can to answer your questions and support you at this time.

    Kind regards,
