Chemotherapy - being prepared

Hi there - my mum, who's 76, is starting chemotherapy next week. She has an aggressive cancer which is in her liver, womb and lymph nodes. They are starting her on a low dose to see how she copes. My sister and I will be taking care of her and we wondered what to expect and how we can be best prepared. I know everyone will respond differently but there may be things we could get to have at home 'just in case' which would be useful. I guess I'm thinking about practical things, food/drink etc

What did you wish you had/rush out to get? Is there anything you wish you'd known before?

  • Hi

    Maybe start with this lot:

Bottled water, i was told to drink 2 litres after a chemo dose.

Digital thermometer is a must to track changes which could be first sign of an infection.

Laxatives and immodium. Both constipation and diarrhoea can be problematic, however the chemo nurses can provide these if they're needed.

Apparently you can get very sore mouth (ulcers) i used TCP at every teeth clean and as a gargle (dilute it) I'm pleased to say i didn't have any mouth problems. Again though the nurses will provide stuff if there are any problems.

Everyone is different as you say some sail through it and some will be on really bad and some can't tolerate it at all.

Sending you all the love and hugs for a smooth journey through it.

Just get those few bits to start, nurses can provide stuff if you need it anyway.

    Best of luck

    Xxx
