Lung Cancer and Bowel Peforation

Hi all,

four months ago my mum was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer (59 years). Apparently it's a rare type and they tried chemotherapy in the form of a pill. It didn't work so she went on to IV chemotherapy - only one round so far. This weekend we ended up in hospital as she got an infection due to a perforated bowel (sigmoid). They choose not to operate as they believed she wouldn't survive the operation. We are now on palliative care and she has been sent home to be cared for. I was wondering if anyone had gone through anything similar? We were told she has days/weeks to live but seems in such high spirits I don't see how this is the case. I'm assuming they have stopped the chemo regime now, but feel like we have been left in the dark with it all. She was given a life expectancy of six months from diagnosis without chemo, but now with the bowel perforation I do worry. My mum seems hopeful that she will recover, but I'm not so sure. Help!

  • Hello Agatha30

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis and that on top of this, she has now had a bowel perforation. Undoubtedly this will be a difficult time for you all and it's natural that you have questions and anxieties about what happens next.

You mention in your post that your Mum is now under the palliative care team. Have they been in touch since her discharge? If not then do get in touch with her GP or the secretary of the Consultant that she was under at the hospital and ask for the palliative team to get in touch with you for support and guidance.

Hopefully, you will have contact with them soon, if you've not already done so. In the meantime, if you want to talk things through with one of our nurses you're most welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice and support they can.

Sending my best wishes to you both,
