Mum stage 4

In November my mum took I'll after having covid we got her admitted to hospital where she was diagnosed with stage 4 mestatic lung cancer.two weeks later we got her home and she was quite poorly needing constant care.she has lost a lot of weight and no appetite and very tired with no energy.last week at appointment they said she wasn't fit enough for treatment

they have put her on steroids for 2 weeks to help with her symptoms and they have made so much difference she can move around and is eating:)

Are steroids a short term thing, our family have no experience of this at all?

we go back to oncologist next Friday

  • Hi holly1972,

I'm sorry to hear of the situation with your mum and I hope you're getting on OK.

As I am not best placed to answer your question, do be sure to talk this through with the specialist when you see them. If in advance of that you would like to chat to someone about this, you are welcome to give our nurses a call on freephone 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Can i ask please how long it was from diagnosis until your Mum saw an oncologist?

My Dad was diagnosed 28th December with oesphaegal and liver cancer (grade 4) and given 6-2 months to live with no treatment. They mentioned the fact that palliative chemo may not be an option as my Dad is failry weak.

Although since then we've heard nothing. My Dad is deteriorating by the day and ended up in A&E last week needing IV fluids and anti biotics. He cannot eat due to a stent and is sick daily. I've rang his CNS but even they dont seem to know what to do.

I just feel a bit lost......

  • Hi Jo,I'm sorry to hear about your Dad

it was about 5 weeks before mum saw the oncologist,it feels so long when you are waiting :(

Before mums last appointment she was also very weak and sick but since oncologist put her on steroids it has been a massive difference!

I hope your Dad gets to see someone soon and they can help

  • Also Jo does your dad have anti-sickness medication that can help

  • Hi Holly

sorry I never replied to you. Sadly my Dad declined really rapidly and passed away 10 days after my message to you xxx
