Can husband put on weight after stomach cancer operation?

My husband had 2/3rds of his stomach removed a month ago and the consultant was happy that he progressed very well while he was in hospital . He has an appointment next week for results and check over so I imagine we will find out more then .
However, despite him having a good appetite and fancying all kinds of food , he can obviously only eat so much and fills up rapidly , the same applies to fluids so he's quite limited  and has lost  massive amount of weight which doesn't increase much. This concerns hi greatly as his skin hangs in folds, he was a well built fit looking man up until a few weeks before his diagnosis/ operation . Will he manage to put a little weight on does anyone know? His bones protrude and don't have much skin cover so can feel uncomfortable sitting sometimes . Pressure areas good as I bought a pressure cushion for him , but he does look very thin . He's on fortisips and forti juice in addition to 5-6 small meals a day plus snacks. Anyone able to give me any info on what to expect and how he can progress please?

  • Hello Suechar

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis. It's understandably been a difficult time for you both and natural that there are questions about how he can best manage his diet and weight since his surgery. Hopefully his appointment next week will provide some advice and support.

We do have some information on our website about managing diet problems in cancer but I'd also really encourage you to ask his Consultant about having some input from a dietician. They should be able to give you some real support, information and advice to help your husband move forwards.

If you'd like to chat with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope his appointment next week brings some good news and send my best wishes for his continued recovery.
