Hepatocellular carcinoma - Hallucinations / Confusion

My Dad is currently suffering with HCC, he was first diagnosed just over a year ago, past 5 weeks he has deteriorated quite quickly. No longer able to look after himself so decided it was best for him to stay with my sister who is now caring for him. we have noticed he is now starting to show strong signs of confusion and hallucinations, drifting in and out of sleep and then randomly talking about things he thinks are happening/happened in the past. its so sad to witness this stage and its very upsetting for both me and my sister at present, just wanted to see if anyone else is also experincing this stage of HCC and if there was anything other than Lorazepam tablets that was given to help with the hallucainations? Any replies would be appreciated, thanks

  • Hello Rossi_46

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's diagnosis and that recently he's deteriorated quite considerably. It's understandably a difficult time for you all and natural that you're upset by the decline in your Dad's health.

Medicines or changes in the chemical balance of your brain can cause confusion or hallucinations and it can be distressing for both the individual and their loved ones. Do speak to your Dad's care team or GP who will be best placed to rule out any underlying medical cause for these symptoms and can arrange different medication to help if appropriate.

If you'd like to talk to one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn,

Thanks for taking the time to reply, means a lot. We have liaised with the medical team who have prescribed some more medicine for him, appears to have helped, just upsetting having to witness watching someone you love so much deteriorate so quickly.

My sister and I are here with him everyday so just making the most of the time we have left with him.
