Stuck in the system..dad diagnosed with advanced lung cancer

My Dad has been diagnosed with primary stage 4 lung cancer with mets in his liver, kidneys, bones and lymphs. This all only came to light when he was admitted to hospital with sepsis 8 days ago. Heartbroken doesn't quite cover it. He has been battling heart disease since 2009.

He is now on three types of antibiotics, having been on two others prior to this. He is high up on the antibiotic ladder but no one knows if this infection is due to the cancer or the sepsis.

He is hardly eating or drinking as he cannot physically do so. Visiting hours are only 2pm - 8pm. Working full time, with two young children and a husand that works shifts, it is so consuming.

I want to break him out and get him comfortable with us all either at home or in a hospice but the hospital want him to stay there to try and get a grip of the infection. Which to me feels pointless when his days with us are limited.

I feel so sad and angry all at the same time. :angry::confused::shocked:

I just want my Dad back.

  • hello alihw

I'm very sorry to hear about your Dad's diagnosis and that he's so very unwell in the hospital at the moment. Undoubtedly this has been a really difficult time for you all and it's understandable that you're experiencing a real rollercoaster of emotions.

Naturally, you will want to make sure that your Dad is having the best possible care. Given that he's so unwell with this infection it may simply not be possible to provide the level of care that he needs outside of an acute hospital setting. Hopefully the team will be able to get a proper handle on things with this new regime of antibiotics and then you'll be able to talk with your Dad and the doctors about moving him to a hospice or back home with the proper support he needs.

If you want to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    Best wishes,
