New and in shock: how to support my child (young adult)

Hello I am looking for somewhere I can post about how to support my child (young adult) with a frightening diagnosis, but somewhere private. Maybe faceb@@k or other platforms so it's not easily found. I want to ask specific questions about things we've not broached yet as a family. Does such a safe place exist, please? Thank you.

  • This is upsetting, no responses at all :(

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your child and the diagnosis.  Unfortunately most of us on this forum are coping with similar situations and we're not experts in where is the best place to find what you need.  I would think the GP service could help direct you to help, or the people who confirmed the diagnosis.  As you've given no indication of the diagnosis then it's hard to help you in the guidance that you need.  I hope you get some helpful advice soon.  Best wishes, Carol

  • Ah thank you for replying, we definitely trust the medical

team on the diagnosis stuff, but the emotional and mental worry is really my priority. Just reacting in the best way is my aspiration.

  • Hello Breezy_Day and a warm welcome to our forum,

I am so sorry to hear about your child's diagnosis.  I can understand why you would want to ask questions in a private platform. Even though this is a public forum, rest assured your posts are anonymous as the username you have chosen in no way reveals your identity. We do have a topic area specifically for members who have been Diagnosed with Cancer At A Young Age and if there is any thread that caught your eye in our forum and you would like to get in touch with a member privately so that no one else can read your discussion, we do offer a private messaging facility. You can read more about how to use our private messaging service on this page

You can also reach out to our nurses on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. You can talk to them about anything that is worrying you and they will be happy to advise you on the phone and you can rest assured that the conversation will remain private and confidential.

I thought  I would also signpost you to a couple of resources which are specifically targeted to supporting young adults like your child and they may be able to point you in the right direction. There is, for example, The Teenage Cancer Trust for young people aged 13-24 and also Young Lives Vs Cancer which offers Live Chat Support and could be a great place to contact for advice.

I hope this helps a little and I hope that you will also hear from others here who have also supported a child who has had a cancer diagnosis and that they will come and share their story with you. I just wanted you to know that we are here for you anytime you feel the need to reach out and talk to others who can relate to what you are going through.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator
