Who can give scan results?

Hi.

My Mum has stage 4 lung cancer. She was awaiting results from a scan check up. She is under the care of a cancer consultant. She was at a GP appointment. Mum mentioned she was waiting to hear from the consultant regarding the results. The GP then checked if the results were in and told my Mum the results. There were signs of progression.

My question is should the GP of told my Mum the results? The GP contacted the consultant after the appointment to alert him to the new results and for him to bring Mum's appointment forward. When my Mum rang the consultants secretary the secretary expressed concern that the GP had updated Mum and asked Mum if the GP had upset her with the news.

Should the results have been left to the consultant to discuss with my Mum?

Thank you.

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis and that her most recent results didn't bring some more positive news.

I'm afraid that I don't know the answer to your question. If you're unhappy with the way your Mum was given the news then it may be worth raising your concerns with the GP Surgery Practice Manager.

Hopefully the Consultant will be able to give your Mum some reassurance at her upcoming appointment.

    Best wishes,
