Partner has stage 4 stomach cancer. Managing Soft Diets

My partner has stage 4 stomach cancer diagnosed in November.  We have been managing soft diets until recently.  Whilst h cereals and soups can be digested he now struggles with potatoes in any form and mince based pasta dishes or fish dishes.   Food is regurgitated and I am struggling to keep up calories. He is even declining milky drinks.   Has anyone any suggestions.

  • Hello SvG and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

I am sorry to hear about your partner's stage 4 stomach cancer diagnosis and the issues he has been having when trying to eat. You can read more about stage 4 stomach cancer on our website on this page and perhaps even more relevant to you is our information on eating problems  that can occur with stomach cancer. There is a general page on our website on diet problems with cancer which may be useful to you and you might be particularly interested in our section on soft diets and our soft diet tips as well as the suggestions we have on our website of soft diet meals. I am sure that you will have tried a lot of these but have a look also at our information on high calorie drinks which may help give your partner the extra nutrition he needs at the moment.

Do talk to your partner's doctor or to a dietician about the issues you have been facing, for example the fact that he has been declining milky drinks and ask whether there are alternatives he could try.

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if you would like to talk to them about all this.

It must be really difficult to know what to make that will not be difficult for him to swallow and digest and I hope that you will hear from other members of the forum who have been through this before and that they will have some good diet tips for you.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator
