Feeding cancer patient

Husband diagnosed with stomach cancer in May. Had mixed reaction to chemo. Sometimes he was ok after a few days but this last time, his sixth, has knocked him back. Not eating, sleeping all the time, sickness and diarrhoea. Two visits to acute unit for iv drip of saline and potassium. I was getting so frustrated just not being able to look after him. BUT, yesterday and today he seems to have turned the corner. Scrambled eggs and Complan stayed down yesterday. With a tiny bread and butter sandwich to end the day. This morning he has kept down two scrambled eggs and I am about to make him a white bread cheese sandwich with the crusts off.
I just wanted to say persevere and you will eventually pass this awful stage. I feel so helpless not being able to take care of him as I would normally.

hopefully we are now of an even pathway and we can begin to build him back up to some sort of strength.

  • That sounds encouraging.

When I was at a similar stage of chemo, my wife blitzed everything in a blender. I survived on home made soup, smoothies and thickshakes. My sense of taste went weird, so we had to experiment to find things that didn't make me heave!
The steroids helped with the nausea and improved my appetite. Don't hesitate before asking for help in treating the side effects - I wasted a month by not complaining about them.

    Good luck
