Advice on steroids

My husband was diagnosed in may this year with gmb grade 4, 3 months with no treatment and 12 to 15 months with radio and chemo.  He had a craniotomy 18th may and finished his 6 weeks of radio and chemo on 19th august, on 22nd august got sepsis from a kidney stone, he has now been home 3 weeks and both his daughters have had a double wedding so he would be there so docs upped his steroids, we made it to the wedding on Saturday for a few hours but he can't get out of bed he simply has no strength but perfectly switched on in his head, I don't know what to expect, will he regain the ability to stand up as it's making him very emotional and there is nothing I can do

  • Hello Lesb1972

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis. It's obviously an incredibly difficult time for you all as a family.

It's fabulous to hear that your daughters could arrange a double wedding this past week and that he was well enough to attend to see them both wed. I'm sure some very happy memories were made during the day.

Given everything that he's been through it's probably understandable that he's feeling so weak at the moment. I would imagine that the weekend left him feeling exhausted.

We simply don't know if he will regain some strength but I'd suggest speaking to his clinical team to see what they say. It may be that they're able to offer some support and advice to help. It may be that even if he doesn't regain enough strength to stand, the physiotherapy or occupational therapy team is able to give you both some support to enable him to be more mobile.

In the meantime perhaps setting some smaller short-term goals to give him focus and try to lift his mood a little may be an option.

If you want to chat things through with our team of nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    Sending my best wishes,
