Hoping for some advice.

Sadly on Saturday, my 75 year old Mum was diagnosed with cancer. It started in her breast and has been on a journey round her body leaving its putrid mark.

Today, I was told the hospital want to discharge her home. Possibly with carers popping in 3 times a day. I'm at a loss as to what to do. I work full time and can't take leave for the remaining weeks/months she has left. Can anyone suggest where I might get some help?

  • Sorry I am not able to give much advice but wanted to say how sorry I am for your situation having had breast cancer myself.

Surely there should be a palliative care assessment or McMillan nurse who will be planning the discharge from hospital you can ask to talk to ? xx

  • Hi Little- Jo

Im am very sorry to hear about your mum. Im in a similar situation with my dad and its very daunting. 3 times a day really isnt much depending on the level of your mums mobility. My dad is wheelchair bound and has 4 visits a day. So thats around 4 hours between visits and it can be difficult if he needs to loo or wants a nap. Do you live close? as if you could do the "first visit" in the mornings and spread out the 3 carer visits perhaps? Or an evening visit.

Mcmillan are lovely and might be able to offer further advise. They look at what benefits your mum may be entitled to and those benefits could be used for more care.

    All the best
