Palliative carers at home & family members question

Just curious but my elderly mother looks after my dad at the moment who has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer and he is bed bound with some confusion and lack of mobillity in legs. She has just been offered Marie Curie carers, they will come round to help look after him for free (overnight and 1 hour in morning) due to him only having weeks left to live. I have thought of moving in and helping out too for when the carers aren't there, rather than just coming over every so often like I do now. If I lived at the house too would this mean my mother wouldn't get her carers help any more ?

I think my mum, and me too, are a bit concerned because the carers are free that if I moved in she would lose that carer help, I don't know if she is only getting a carer because she lives alone (apart from my dad of course) or if Marie Curie send carers regardless. So my question really is, do Marie Curie care if multiple adult members of the household are living there in the house ? I thought someone here might already know.

Thanks !!

  • Hi

Marie curie are specialist nurses that deal with end of life care. The main reason the cover the night shift is so your mum can sleep knowing your dad is in good hands, they are also incredible in emotional support.

I don't know if they would restrict their service if you were there permanent.

I had them for my husband for all of one night, (we'd been left to get on with it prior to that) regardless of more than just me in the house.

Call them and ask out right,

Hugs and best of luck to you all.

  • I've just lost my dad and he wanted to be at home, we had community palliative nurses and rosemary foundation nurses, they came out whenever we needed them and me and all my sisters were all there. We were never asked anything about finances and dad was entitled to the care. There were 4 of us plus the nurses and carers coming in as he couldn't be left alone. The more of the better so you can support each other. Xx

  • I'm pretty sure it won't make any difference - but please call their helpline and ask.
