Stage 4 Esphogus cancer (confused)

Hi everyone, this is my first post as I just don't know where else to turn.

My partner of 18 years recently gave birth to our third child, throughout pregnancy she was experiencing chronic pain in her back and having difficulties swallowing, she mentioned this to several proffesionals who all dismissed it as pregnancy related.

After our beautiful baby girl Aoife was born on the 15th May 2022 the symptoms continued and she went to see her g.p, she said it was constipation and sent her away with bottle of lactulose. Obviously this did not work so she went back for second opinion, this g.p said it was a Hernia and referred her for scan.

This was when cancer was discovered (fathers day) of all days are baby girl just 5 weeks old. A scan then followed and they gave us worst possible news, the cancer had spread to the lungs and liver.

Initially she was given 6/12 months, further investigations showed the mutation was her2 so prognosis altered to 14 months, as they could now include a targeted therapy.

She has chemo infusuon every 3 weeks taking tablets daily in-between.

I am so confused as my partner appears to go from strength to strength she looks so well, energy levels perfect, nothing negative I can report, she has just had her third cycle and continues to respond incredibly.

She has no side effects to the chemo and is fully functioning.

She is taking cannabis oil and are consultant is aware. Since starting this oil, she has zero pain.

I also forget to say prior to starting chemo she could basically not swallow any foods and even struggled with fortisips, she can now basically eat any food.

She has even started using a personal trainer 3 times a week.

She is 38yo and very fit and is maintaining her weight etc.

I know all of the above is amazing and she amazes every person who knows her including the nurses on the cancer ward

But how is all this possible I'm so confused. I forget she has cancer let alone it being terminal.

  • Hi Mike,

Your partner's story is amazing and very hopeful.

My own diagnosis was also delayed due to a misdiagnosis and being sent down the wrong care pathway.

It sounds like her chemo regime is very similar to mine. Everyone reacts differently to chemo with different side effects. After my third cycle I had almost all the frequent side effects except hair loss.
Remember that any expected life expectancy figures are based on averages and take no account of an individual's age, fitness levels (which affects your body's ability to recover from chemo), co-morbidities (pre-existing conditions) etc. These stats also exclude statistical outliers like me who are still alive and kicking 9 years after they were given between 3 and 6 months to live with a Stage 4 OC diagnosis.

The fact that she can swallow again is probably a sign that her primary cancer is shrinking as a result of the chemo. At the end of the treatment she will probably have a CT scan to check how effective the chemo has been.
I hope she continues to amaze everyone!

    Good luck to you both!

    Dave

  • Morning Dave, Thank you for taking time to reply to my post and may I just say Wow! Your story is utterly amazing and must say I've cried my eyes up reading it, totally inspirational.

Much of what you said, is word for word what I've been telling my partner, it's a median average and the fact she is immensely fit physically can only help and the fact she's 38 and just had a baby will give her inner strength like no other. The maternal instinct to protect there young will kick in.

She just literally amazes me, sounds ridiculous to say its taken a diagnosis of cancer for me to be the proudest I've ever been.

Not once has she got angry at the world or even asked the 'why me' question. She's just carried on like normal.

She has a scan on the 25th September during 4th cycle I'm guessing we'll see more then.

    Thank you again.

    Kind regards Mike

  • Hi Mike ,

Your wife sounds like she is doing brilliantly , I would say while things are good and going well try and make the most of it , make plans and memories ! some people to react really well to treatment better than anyone would expect sounds like your wife is ! and this is fantastic !

May I ask what cannabis oil she uses , what dose etc heard a lot of posotive things about cannabis oil and my Dad's treatment is not working so going to try cannabis oil but no idea where to start in eagrds of doses etc !

    Michelle x

  • Hi Michelle,

So sorry to hear about your dad.

Thanks for the reply and yes she's doing amazing going from strength to strength. She's now able to eat and drink at the same time, which she hasn't been able to do since 26weeks pregnant.

Huge day tomorrow as she has first scan since the treatment started, get to see exactly what's going in inside.

From 26 weeks pregnant she was unable to sleep such was the pain and the expression climbing the walls, I now know what this means.

Within a day of taking the oil her pain had gone completely, we'd tried morphine etc nothing sufficed.

With this she has no negative symptoms.

Obviously being end of life her anxiety was through the roof, this oil has also stopped all of this.

Does it cure cancer ! Probably not, but her quality of life has changed no end. She is pain free, able to sleep and no anxiety.

The oil we are now using is predominantly cbd based with a small amount of thc.

I believe it also helps with the adverse effects chemo can bring, I.e sickness etc.

Her consultant is aware she takes it and has not expressed any concerns.

She has x3 tea spoons per day. It comes a wax like substance but with very gentle heat turns into an oil, and she does swallows it off the spoon.

It's not cheap as in one jar they use 2 ounce of cannabis plants.

I would highly recommend to anyone.

We may actually be appearing on breakfast t.v in the very distant future as people have been amazed at the pain management side.

    Mike

Another huge benefit is her appetite is improved to as cannabis is known for giving people the munchies.

  • I'm really sorry to hear your dad's treatment isn't working Michelle. This must be incredibly difficult and it's only natural to want to explore other avenues when this happens but we just wanted to let you know that whilst research is ongoing, there is currently no evidence to suggest that cannabis oil can effectively treat or cure cancer.

Whilst some people have found CBD oil can help with pain relief, there is also no evidence to suggest that this can treat or cure cancer either and due to the potential side effects and risks it may cause with conventional cancer treatment we would recommend speaking with your dad's doctor/cancer team first to check whether it is o.k for him to use. You can find out more about the safety of complementary or alternative therapies on our website.

It's quite easy to confuse CBD oil and cannabis oil but as our website explains, CBD oil comes from the flowers of the cannabis plant and does not contain the psychoactive substance THC. It can be sold in the UK as a food supplement but not as a medicine as there is no evidence to support its use as a medicine.

Cannabis oil on the other hand comes from the flowers, leaves and stalks of the cannabis plant and often contains high levels of the psychoactive ingredient THC. Cannabis oil is illegal in the UK. To be clear, Cannabis is a class B drug in the UK. This means that it is illegal to have it, sell it or buy it.

We hope this helps clear up any confusion and clarify things for you but if you'd like to discuss this further with one of our cancer nurses, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.
