Bowel cancer

Hi my dad was diognosed with t3 bowel cancer. They recently done planning scans for treatment and have today said somethink has flashed up on the large intestine on the pet scan so they need to do biopsies. What does this mean as im really confused would it be 2 seperate cancers in the bowel. I just dont understand any advice would be great
