Mums cancer incurable

Hi,

My mum had lung cancer in 2016 and had surgery to move it. At that time we was told there was no spread, she did her 5 years remission and everything seemed fine. About 3 months ago she started to cough up blood. She had a CT scan done and we was told her cancer had come back in her other lung. They were pretty sure it was a new primary cancer and easily treatable at 4.6cm. She was sent for a scan on her liver and brain to check for mets and all was clear. It was great news considering. She was then sent for a PET scan and we got results yesterday that the cancer was actually a spread from her original cancer is 2016 and has been there all this time bur had not been noticed on CT scans in 2016, 2018 & 2019 and only picked up now in 2022. The cancer has spread to her soft tissue in her chest and her hip bone. She has been in agonising pain with her hip since around December 2021 and was told it was arthritis. She's now been told her cancer is incurable and she's got to see somebody tomorrow about what the plan is going forward. I'm only 29 and I've already lost my dad 2 years ago to throat cancer. I'm so scared about the time I have left with my mum. Will we be given a prognosis on time she has left? Generally how bad is this information? Does anyone have a similar story?

  • Hello PaigeL24

I'm So sorry to hear about your Mum's recent diagnosis. It's understandably a difficult time for you both.

How did her appointment go yesterday? I hope that the team was able to answer any questions that you both have and that they were able to explain what the plan is going forwards.

If there's anything you'd like to talk through with our team of nruses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

Let us know how you're getting on if you feel able to.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Paige, I'm so sorry to hear what you're going through. It's so frustrating that it wasn't picked up on the scans.

I don't know much about breast cancer so can't relate to that unfortunately, but my dad has a type of thyroid cancer which we've been told isn't curable, unfortunately the type he has is one of the most aggressive cancers you can get and most people don't survive more than 4-6 months after diagnosis. I'm 24 so a similar age to you.

Have you inquired in to whether there are any clinical trials available?
I joined a Facebook group for people with my dads type of rare cancer and found that useful as people were sharing information about new types of treatments and advice.

Wishing for peace for you and your family x
