Advice on swallowing and mucus

I am writing on behalf of my dad he is 71, this is his last week of radiotherapy and had two lots of chemo due to infection on the weeks he was supposed to. He has cancer on the back of the tongue and lymph nodes in neck & not spread anywhere else. He cannot swallow anything water or medication and is fed via his feeding Rig, with medication and water too going through it. He has a very high pain threshold but he said this pain when swallowing is the worse ever. Can I ask what pain relief worked for you or a relative? He is on morphine modified release capsule and paracetamol and liquid morphine. He is struggling and choking on saliva and phlem and is refusing to take the capsule this weekend.  They have discontinued the granules so we can't give it through the feeding Rig. Did anyone have pain patches or anything anyone can recommend we are off to hospital for appointments in the morning. It's heartbreaking to see my dad like this, it's mentally torturous seeing him so down with it all.

  • Hello Harris and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm very sorry to hear how much pain your dad is in and the difficulty he is having with swallowing.

I hope his appointments went well the other day and his medical team were able to provide some solutions and stronger pain relief but if you'd like to have a quick chat with one of our cancer nurses about this, they're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully some of our members who have contended with these issues on their cancer journeys will share their advice and experiences with you soon but in the meantime we're thinking of you and wishing your dad all the best with his recovery.

    Best wishes to you both,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
