What are the survival chances of advanced Pancreatic cancer?

Hi I was just wondering if anyone could give me any advice or help, words of support....anything at all! My mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer which has spread to the liver. They have said they cannot operate but will be offered chemo once they have done the biopsies etc.

I have tried to research survival chances, etc but all the websites say different things. I'm assuming if it's already spread to the liver then it's classed as stage 4?

I don't really know what I'm asking here or wanting to know but I am an actual mess right now and I don't know what to do

  • Hi , my partner was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2017 , massive shock came out of the blue , only symptom was sudden onset of jaundice . Eventually had massive op then chemo . All well for a while then after regular cts we were told it was back !! Had radiation therapy , regular cts and bloods ( I was told but not him that he had about a year to live ) that was 2 and a half years ago . Recently had a blocked bile duct and a massive weight loss but cancer still in same place it returned to and not really changed , although tumour markers increase with each blood test . Anyway to cut a long story short he is now 57 , had a difficult stent recently put in to help bilirubin drain and now been diagnosed as insulin dependant diabetic . Due to tumour markers increasing is now to start palliative chemo next Tuesday , currently feeling well therefore reluctant to start the chemo . What I'm trying to say is that no one really knows how each individual will go through their cancer journey , statistics are only that !!! . I have noticed that compared to some people we meet in hospital he has a much more positive view and enjoys every minute of life when he's feeling well ( I try and hide any negative feelings from him , difficult at times ) . I havnt any answer but he's 5 years down the line  , we have met drs that are surprised at that but everyone is different . Hope is essential in any cancer diagnosis and I hope this gives you some , take care and look after yourself too .

  • Hi thank you for your message. I'm glad your husband is still going strong on his journey, despite the little bumps along the way. Unfortunately mum is not well. The end Is nearing very quickly. From diagnosis 5 weeks ago to now she is like a different person. She can no longer tend to her own needs, is is in and out of sleep all day, appetite is non existent, badly jaundiced ( no blockage so doesn't need stent) and the cancer has spread rapidly and has now spread further, covering 60% of her liver. Palliative nurses have been to see us and they've said she is in her final days. I don't understand how someone can go so downhill in 5weeks. It's crazy

  • This is heartbreaking to read Sarah.

I didn't like to say but one of my relatives only lasted 1 week after formal diagnosis (two weeks after collapse with jaundice). It was a huge shock. So so sorry you have to go through this. It can happen with pancreatic cancer.

There is nothing I can really say to ease your pain. My thoughts are with you at this very difficult time. x
