Delirium and no appetite

Hi, my Mum has Squamous Cell Head and Neck Cancer.  Completed 3 rounds of Chemo and 6 wks of Radiontherapy which finished in February 2022.  There have been numerous hospital admissions and more recently my mums appetite has been severely affected and she was admitted to receive a feeding tube (which she took out once she home). Mum was readmitted again 3 days later due to confusion and it was diagnosed as Delirium due to unfamilar hospital settting.  There was no other medical cause identified except delirium.

Mums now home but the appetite has almost gone and cant/will not take the protein Shakes and eats very very little during the day.  I have tried finger foods, small snacks, blended food and shakes.  Mum also continues to hae some lapses of delirium, this has lasted for around 4 wks off and on.

Has anyone had experience of delrium or lack of apptetite that could provide some support or highlight their experiences?

  • I'm no expert so this is just a comment

my dad's appetite went following his chemotherapy, it made all his food taste bitter, he drove my mum around the bend, she would cook something he fancied and half way through cooking he would say he didn't want it

he ended up so weak they took him into hospital to feed him up a bit

this isn't much help but at least you know that you're not the only one

  • Hi. Thank you for the reply. It sounds very familiar. My mum fancies something to eat then as soon as it is put in front of mum, she has gone off it!

Mum will definitely end up back in hospital. Which is the last place due to another onset of delirium.

    thanks again.
