Dad can’t keep fluids down

My dad has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer with mets to his liver, rib and 2 bones in his spine, just under 2 weeks ago.
The only symptom he had which caused his diagnosis was severe pain in his rib which he had to be hospitalised for. They've said he will be having treatment and he is having a biopsy this Wednesday.
The palliative team came out on Thursday due to his pain not being managed with regular pain relief, and they've prescribed slow release morphine 2 x a day.
He has been constipated for weeks due to taking a lot of pain killers (before and after his diagnosis). At the weekend we started him on Lactulose 15ml twice a day.
He has managed to no longer be constipated but has gone the complete different way, he's having severe diarrhoea and vomiting. He's been unable to keep water down for the past hour without it coming out either way. My sister is on the phone to 111 due to us calling his lung cancer nurse and advising us to call them.
I'm terrified that this is a bad sign that his cancer is spreading too quick and that he won't even make it to his biopsy on Wednesday or he will be too weak for treatment.
If anybody has experienced similar please let me know I'm so scared

  • I'm really sorry about the difficulties your dad is having at the moment Hannahlisa but I hope that 111 were able to help and that things have improved since you made this post.

Our members know how challenging it can be to see a loved one in so much distress so you are not alone and hopefully some of them will be along soon to offer their support and advice.

If you or sister would also like to discuss your concerns with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

We're thinking of you Hannahlisa and hope your dad's biopsy goes well today.

    Best wishes to you all,

  • Hi Steph!

Thank you for your response, thankfully my dads sickness and diarrhoea has cleared itself up. He had one bout of diarrhoea yesterday but has been fine since then. Fingers crossed all is ok!

  • That's great news  and I'm sure a big relief for you all.

Do let us know how he gets on.

We'll be thinking of you and hope good news comes from the biopsy results.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Steph,

Apparently he did really well with his biopsy. I spoke to his lung cancer specialists yesterday, and they reassured us his biopsy is just to determine which treatment is going to be best for him, as we were all worried after his so called palliative nurse (who he's only been referred to due to the fact his rib pain was quite severe) said that at this stage his treatment is just to alleviate symptoms but that's another story

His specialists reassured us that while it's incurable they will be doing treatment to shrink the tumours and give him a much better prognosis (and hopefully make it become manageable long-term) not just to alleviate symptoms, and that the biopsy results are just to determine which treatment will be best (rather than determine if treatment is an option as they've said it is 100% on his plan)
