The NHS messed up my mum

I am really angry with the NHS and the treatment my mum received there. Diagnored with breat cancer, she needs to go through 3 surgeries that could have been avoided if we had gone privately or abroad since the first symptoms. Not only the NHS does not apply the latest methods in surgery (in her case intraoperative margin assesment) but they also tried to block us from going privately by refusing to share medical notes and discouraged us from getting a second opinion.

I get the whole underfunded system and everything, but why all the lies and discouragement to go privately?

Also, what's up with everyone praising the NHS here, do you even know anything different?

After moving my mum's treatment to the private sector abroad, the difference is HUGE. It really explains why the UK has the worst cancer survival rates in western Europe. I hope that people reading can learn from the mistake that we made to trust the NHS.

  • I have to admit, i don't get the whole NHS praising either. Some parts of it is shocking. My wife has an absolutely fantastic oncologist and surgeon. Can't fault them at all. Wouldn't swap them for anything. They have saved her life, along, with their dedicated teams. AAA+

However, some of the nurses have left a lot to be desired. She was given a dedicated cancer nurse. No query calls returned and only 3 calls in 6 months. Two of those calls only happened because the oncologist went daft at them because 1) they failed to notify her of her then upcoming surgical appointment, and 2) They were never following up every time she got discharged from hospital after chemo. She was in hospital a good few times, once for a week due to the effects of chemo. Poor.

On the dedicated cancer ward, there was a woman who could not sit up to feed herself because she had awful vertigo when she did due to a brain tumour. The nurses wouldn't help her as they stated she wasn't as bad as she was making out. My wife fed her, her meals for 3 days. When she wasn't being hand fed by other patients, her meals were going untouched. Drinking was fine as she could use straws. That is one story amongst many. Some of them just as shocking.

I get these people are stretched, but eating is a basic need for anyone. But they were failing her, the hospital was failing her all because a couple of nurses thought she was at it. My wife said she wasn't as the couple of times she did try to sit, the lady was sick both times with the vertigo.

One day the wife was handed a hard piece of bread for her breakfast from a nurse. No spread with it either lol. Just hard dry bread. I mean, who can't tell a stale piece of bread from a fresh piece? Who would even think that would be ok? I doubt she'd have eaten it herself. The wife just went to the cafe instead. Against the wishes of that nurse. Couldn't make it up if you tried.
