My Mum diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and struggling to cope

My mum was diagnosed with cancer in breast, lung, liver and back after loosing her ability to walk. The news came as a shock to us as she initally was turned down by doctors due to bad back pains. They are stilling awaiting a few results from the biopsy to advise on next steps. They advised its too far spread for treatment and will only be managed. My family lives back home and its just my mum and me here. I am struggling to get her set up with proper care, such a suitable living place as her own place isnt suitable, care and just knowing what to do to help her as much as possible. They said they would *** her home first and decide if she needs to be in like a care home but today they spoke about discharge. Mixed messages and I am scared.

I am always speaking to different members of the team, different advise etc and don't know who the best person is to speak to and to sort everything out.  It feels like I am speaking to so many people but keep going in cirlces, which is giving me anxiety and  adding to my constant worry.

I am trying to look after myself too but my mum's in a position at the mo, where she needs 24hr care and its hard to feel settles with no plan/ knowing what is going to happen.

Does anyone know any tips?

Thank you so much

  • Hi Savy,

I'm very sorry to hear of your mum's diagnosis and for the worry and stress trying to sort out her care is causing.

Many of our members know how challenging it can be to get this in place, especially in pandemic times, so you are not alone and hopefully some of our members will be able to offer their tips and advice to you soon.

We do have some general information about the types of support that may be available to you on our website but if you feel it may help to discuss this with one of our cancer nurses then do be sure to give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they'll do all they can to work through this with you.

As you've mentioned, it's really important that you try to take some time for yourself and I hope this guidance we have on our website can help.

We're here for you Savy and I hope the replies you've received on your other thread are helping you stay calm during this very stressful time.

    Best wishes to you both,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
