Dad's picc line being kept in despite normal scans. Worried

Hi all,

My dad finished his chemo last month and had scans. He has to wait till the 26th to see a doctor about his results. He called his consultant and the receptionist said his scans are 'normal' but they won't take his picc line out.

He had bowel cancer and cancer cells in his blood (did not know that was a thing but its the way he has communicated it with me).

He had major surgery and they removed his bowel so now has a bag. He also now has three large hernias in his stomach and issues with his blood circulation in his legs.

Anyway sorry I kind of went of track it's all so overwhelming. Why are they keeping the picc line in if his scans are 'normal' and what are the chances he still has cancer? His chemo was 6 months.

Thanks from a very anxious daughter

  • Hello Jacjac89

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's diagnosis and all that he's been through over the past few months. It sounds positive that his recent scans haven't raised any immediate cause for concern but it's understandable that you still have concerns and queries.

I would imagine that at his appointment on the 26th that the Consultant would be able to give you both some clearer information about the situation.

If you think it may help to talk to one of our nurses ahead of that appointment you're welcome to call them when they return to the office after the bank holiday weekend. They are available 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040 and I'm sure will be happy to offer any support and advice that they can ahead of your Dad's next appointment.

Do let us know how he gets on.

    Best wishes,
