Need support

Hi all. I'm new to this so am looking for advice and support.

My fiancé was diagnosed with tonsil cancer in December. Had a large growth removed and has undergone 7 weeks of radiotherapy and 2 lots of chemotherapy which he finished last week. He is only being fed through a peg tube which I am doing as he refuses to touch it which I understand. He's getting more snappy and hurtful when I'm trying to give his good. I know it's not aimed at me but it still upsets me and I wonder if anyone can give me words of advice on how to cope as I'm really struggling.

thanks Jenny

  • Hello Jenny and a big welcome to our forum,

I can imagine things are not the easiest for you at the moment and it must be so stressful for you to have to deal with this but you are doing an incredible job and I am sure your fiance appreciates your support and you being by his side even if the discomfort of what he is going through is no doubt making him snappy. It must be really hurtful as you are doing your best and you are right I am sure it is not aimed at you and it's just a way for him to express his frustration at the moment. It's normal that it upsets you but try not to take it personally if you can. It may be worth talking to his specialist if you feel for example that he is in too much pain and that it is affecting his mood as I am sure they will be able to help with things like making sure he has adequate pain relief. Don't hesitate also to talk to your own GP about how you are feeling at the moment especially if you feel you are really struggling. I hope that you have some good support around you to help you both get through this difficult time.

I hope that his recovery goes well and that he isn't in too much pain. Should you wish to talk things through with our cancer nurses, don't hesitate to get in touch with them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that you will hear from some of our members who have been through this before and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
