Mum refusing treatment - cervical cancer

Hello my mum has been diagnosed with stage 2b cervical cancer currently she is saying she doesn't want to have treatment due to the wait time and the fact that she has a needle phobia. She says she feels she is unable to cope with this mentally and doesn't know how she will be able to cope with having intense treatment. She also doesn't feel like speaking to other people about her mental health will help. I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar situation and has any advice on what we can do to support her moving forward. She is also a smoker and I wonder if there's anything we can do to help her stop this habit, currently she shows no interest in stopping.

  • Hi emfrog10

Sorry to hear about your mum. I had stage 2b cervical cancer at my diagnosis 3.5 years ago, but had the treatment.

Treatment typically lasts 4-6 weeks and yes, it is intense but manageable. Yes, there are needles involved in chemo and blood tests. But treatment is usually very successful. The wait time for me between diagnosis and treatment was about 6 weeks.

It’s everyone’s right to refuse treatment of course, but does your mum understand the implications of refusing it? The cancer won’t just disappear- it will grow and spread and then there will only be one outcome.

Surely a few weeks of treatment would be preferable?

She definitely would benefit from help with her mental health, but again you cannot force anyone to do this. Can you speak to her consultant at all to raise your concerns?

i hope she will reconsider her decision.x
