Collapsing after chemo

My mum has advanced ovarian cancer. She's been having carboplatin, but on Tuesday she was given paclitaxel. I went to visit her yesterday (Saturday) and while I was there she collapsed. She didn't justfaint. It was really odd. She collapsed with her eyes wide open, and wasn't breathing. I started to move her to a better position snd she made a weird gurgling noise and was back again, sort of.I say sort of because she was very vacant. I phoned her cancer unit who advised to call an ambulance immediately, which I did, and she was taken into hospital. They kept her in. I spoke to her tonight and she sounds so sick. She says she has terrible stomach pain, and is very tired. She said she wishes she could just go to sleep and not wake up. I feel so damned useless because there's nothing I can do to take this away from her. I'm so worried about her going home. If this had happened with no one there, I have no doubt she'd have died. She lives alone and won't let me give up work to look after her. I'm going to try and speak to her gynae nurse tomorrow, to see what can be done, but I'm so worried she will fall at home.

  • Hi Morwena,

I just came across your post and I'm very sorry to hear of your mum's diagnosis and what happened on Saturday.

That must have been very scary so it's completely understandable why you're worried about leaving her on her own but I hope you were able to speak with her gynae nurse and find out what can be done.

We also have some information on what care and support options may be available but if you'd like to discuss this in more detail with one of our cancer nurses, they're just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind regards,
