Mum with stomach cancer diagnosis, feeding tube help

Hi,  New to here.  Mum has been diagnosed with stomach cancer.  She hasn't been able to eat for a good few months and has lost over 4stone.  She has now had a naisal feeding tube fitted.  She was in hospital for a week as all her levels were knocked out ie manesium, which she has medication for, she is also on digoxin as her hear rate and pulse fluctuated in hospital.  Since she has came home she is so tired.  She just wants to sleep and has no energy.  Is there anyone who has had a similar experience that could give me a little hope that this is her just getting used to the feed and she will build up energy again to pray that she can get chemo and surgery?  Very worried daughter!

  • A warm welcome to Cancer Chat, Lolly45.

I'm sorry to hear that your mum has been diagnosed with stomach cancer and is feeling so poorly.

Hopefully, other members here who have had a similar experience will come along shortly to talk with you and offer advice.

The other thing I wanted to mention is that we have a page on our website that offers tips and ideas on how to cope with stomach cancer, for example how to deal with eating problems and weight loss. Maybe this can be of some help.

All the best to you and your mum,

  • Hi,

    thank you for your reply.

I have looked at that, however I was just wondering if anyone else had a similar experience with the feeding tube.  She seems to be struggling with diharrea and sickness.  She is on different medication right now which could also be a contributing factor.

they have said they are trying to build her strength to get chemo and surgery.  So praying this can be cured!

  • Hi there,  not in the same situation as you but my FIL has also had stomach cancer.  They found it when he had a stroke when he had coronavirus last September.

He was offered laser treatment to shrink the mass and no further treatment.  He then had to move in with us to a different location where he was offered surgery.  He had a partial gastrectomy on Jan 31st.  Since then 2 chest infections but now is starting to get better.  He is 78.

He is also on a feeding tube straight into his intestine.  He still doesn't feel like eating much but he's trying stuff he likes.  It is a long road and we don't know how it will end but we are giving it our best to fight for better days.

I do hope your mum can sustain her weight and get some treatment.  Let me know how you get on and be safe in the knowledge you are not alone.

    Take care

  • Thanks for taking the time to reply.  I'm glad to hear your FIL is doing ok.

sadly my mum lost her fight on Tuesday 8th March.  Her feeding tube had caused problems in the bowel.  I'm heartbroken without her!

wish your FIL all the very best and to win the fight against this awful disease! X

  • I am so sorry for your loss. You must be devastated and feel a huge hole in your life.  I hope she passed peacefully and you have some support at this time.

My FIL has cancer in his local lymph nodes and is not strong enough for chemotherapy so we are not sure what the future holds. It is very stressful when you want to get someone better but it seems impossible.  Every day is a roller coaster.

Thanks for replying especially at this difficult time.  This forum is invaluable.

    Take care,  gigi
