Dad has prostate cancer and lives abroad

Hi,

My dad was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer a few years ago, metasized to the bone in his hip, leg and spine. He lives in another country, and it's so scary not being able to see him or go to appointments with him. I feel guilty not having been able to visit him during his chemo and radiotherapy and now hormone treatment. Covid has made this even harder. I'm scared and sad that time is slipping away and I can't see him often enough. I was wondering if anyone is in the same position.

Thanks

  • Hi vickibell,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm so sorry to hear of the situation with your dad - I can only imagine how difficult this must be and I can understand the distance and the restrictions must be making things particularly hard.

It's easier said than done I know, but try not to feel guilty for things outside your control, such as the restrictions involved in travel, visiting and so on. I'm sure he knows you are there for him, even if it's not always in person.

Hopefully you are able to keep in touch with him one way or another, and I hope also that you have a support network around you to talk things through and get the relevant support for you too.

We're always here on the forum if ever you need it. I'm sure there will be others here who are going through or have been through something similar, so hopefully you'll receive further replies soon. You can also try searching the forum (using the button in the blue bar above) for other potentially relevant discussions.

Take care and wishing you all the best,

    Ben
