TUBE FEEDING

Hi there

just really looking for someone who has similar problems to my father, who was diagnosed with throat cancer 12 years ago, thankfully the cancer has been treated. But the treatment of radiation has in time destroyed his voice box and has collapsed in on itself. Now he can no longer eat or drink the normal way, and has to feed him self through a syringe pumping liquid food into his stomach. This makes him very queasy and gives him diorea. When he first had the cancer he was on a drip kind of form where the liquid food was pumped in, he says it was better because it did not make him feel so sick and his poos were more solid. The only thing was the noise of the pump in the night used to drive him around the bend. Just wondering if any one out there would know of an alternative meathod which he could try. Any information would be truly gratefull, as his really struggling

thanks jason

  • Hello Jason

I'm sorry to hear about the problems that your Dad is having as a result of his radiotherapy treatment. it's understandable that he may be feeling frustrated about things.

We do have some information on our website about types of tube feeding which may be helpful and you're most welcome to call our team of nurses to chat things through with them if you'd like. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I'm presuming that your Dad has a specialist nurse or has access to a team who can offer advice and support around feeding. Do get in touch with them to discuss his concerns as they should also be able to help or arrange for your Dad to see someone. Alternatively, his GP will be the first port of call for getting some assistance.

I do hope that he's able to find a better solution to this problem and that things settle soon.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
