Mum getting results before all scans done. Is this normal?

Hi this is my first time posting.  I dont know where to turn for some help.

My mum was told that she has lung cancer which has spread to her neck lymph nodes, a 5 days before Christmas. Its come as a massive shock as she only turned 59 in October and other than issues with her throat and being tired she has been feeling fine.

She got a biopsy taken the day before Christmas Eve and we were told that once the PET scan had been done and more scans of her body they would get her back in and discuss treatment, as they would have the biopsies back and know exactly what the next stages were.  However, today she got a call and needs to go in tomorrow for her biopsy results.  We're very confused as we didn't think she'd get the results until all the scans were done.  Is this normal?

If its not good tell me as I need to try and prepare myself. Even though I've never been so scared in my life I need to try and be strong for my mum.

Thank you x

  • From my experience, results of biopsies and scans are two different things. The former is a formal diagnosis, the latter (scan results) will be how they're gonna approach it. The biopsies also allow them to know the specific cancer they're dealing with. Using your example, not all lung cancers are the same. Each type may have different treatments, as is the case with other types of cancer.
