Is having minimal side-effects during Chemo normal?

Hello there,

I'm more making this post on behalf of a family member who is undergoing Chemotherapy.

My family member was diagnosed with Lung Cancer that had spread to around 1/3 of a lung, and was passed into Chemo treatment fairly quickly.

Currently we've just finished the third course out of four however a part from a few odd days feeling sick, headaches & tiredness, he's sailed through this with minimal issues. He lost weight to begin with, but by around course 2 he was keeping a stable weight & appetite. No hairloss at all, but his hair has stopped growing on his head!

Is this rare? He's worried that it might be a sign of the treatment not working but reading around valid Cancer websites, the side effects are completely individual to each person?

  • My wife who is on her 3rd chemo too has just had minor side effects. Headache etc. but been pretty much as you were more often than not. In fact, constipation has been her biggest issue.

Yeah, everyone is individual, however, with chemo it can be accumulative. So do keep that in mind.  You won't really know if it's relatively plain sailing or not until he's done. Not all chemos are equal too.  Some tend to be better tolerated than others.   I don't think how awful you feel during treatment is indicative of how it's dealing with the cancer.

  • Hi

I hope this helps. I have just finished 12 rounds of chemo and nausea didn't kick in (again) until round 10 (because of the accumulative effects of chemo). The first was the worst because I had a high dose which they lowered slightly to reduce the really bad nausea I was having. The lowering of the dose was, in the main part, due to the vast amount of weight I had lost over the time between diagnosis and treatment.

Since round 2 - I have not really struggled - yes I get fatigue and tearful (antidepressents have helped with that one).

After round  6 I had a scan and the chemo was doing what it should do so the lack of symptoms doesn't appear to mean the chemo is not working, if you take my experience.

    Hope that helps

  • Hi!

My mum had non-Hodgkins Lymphoma six years ago, and very minimal side effects from her treatment, aside from total hair loss. In fact, she was able to continue working throughout very intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy (not that I would recommend this). But yes, the side effects are definitely different for everyone - and absolutely not a sign that the treatment isn't working, as my mum has now been in remission for five years :)

  • My dad had a form of chemotherapy (in pill form) for a form of leukemia and seemed to have minimal side effects. The cancer went into remission and didn't return.
