Dexmethasone end of life

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone is or has been in the same situation.
My mum was diagnosed with lung cancer last year and now has brain mets. She had massive seizures last week, two consultants have told us she has days - weeks to live. We managed to get her home as it's her wish to be at home when the time comes. She is currently on Dexmethasone and seems great. I know they only mask what's there but I can't see her going from how she is now to not being here for Christmas. Does anyone have any info on the steroids for when they start reducing them more?

  • Welcome to the Cancer Chat community Soworriedrightnow although I'm so sorry for the reason you're joining us.

Your mum's palliative care team should be able to explain how this works but if you're unable to speak with them then you're welcome to have a chat with our cancer nurses on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very supportive and well informed and will do all they can to help you at this challenging time.

Hopefully some of our members will offer you their support and share their experiences with you soon as well but in the meantime, we're all thinking of you and sending our strength and courage your way.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Have they given her Levetiracetam as well to control the seizures?

My father when he had seizures from the same thing he was given this as well as dexamethasone. I believe he was on a high dose that was tapered somewhat after a while. I think after a while some of the effects it can exert can rear its head - in my dad's case he had complete reversion of day and night where he couldnt sleep at night but neither couldn't be awake in the day. They say that at sustained high doses this is a classic side effect of dexamethasone.

Hoping the for the best for you and hope you all manage to get a good Christmas in together.

  • [@nickh31]‍ yes she is already on that as she had seizures when she was first diagnosed due to sodium.
the steroids are halved now and she's noticeably more tired.
I'm really hoping we get to spend Christmas together, she's a fighter so fingers crossed.
