Oesphageal Dysphagia

Hi,

Have recently had an operation to try to insert a balloon into my oesphagus to stretch it as  I have a stricture. The operation failed as they could not get into it.

What other types of surgery are there and where are the best consultants/ hospitals in the UK that deal with this. Although the cancer treatment has been successful I don't feel as though I am back to a normal life yet as I am still dependent upon a feeding tube and cannot take anything orally. I cannot even swallow my own saliva without it coming back up

  • Hi and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to hear your latest surgery was not a success and can appreciate how frustrating this must be.

Unfortunately, we aren't able to recommend any specific hospitals or surgeons as I'm not aware of any that specialise specifically in any surgeries for oesophageal strictures .Sometimes though, more than one attempt may be needed to stretch the oesophagus, though this will vary from patient to patient according to their situation. It can take a while for things to settle down after treatment and although you don't say how long ago it was, it may still be early days.

You may have already come across the following websites The Oesophageal Patients Organisation and GutsUK , which includes lots of information for oesophageal cancer patients , but I have put in the link here https://opa.org.uk/  and here https://gutscharity.org.uk/advice-and-information/conditions/oesophageal-cancer/ as they may perhaps be able to help you further regarding this.

Second opinions are common and usually people will ask to be referred to hospitals with big cancer units, especially if they may have been initially treated in smaller units, depending on where they are in the country.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to help, but do give us a ring if you would like to go over any of this in more detail, on Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best

    Wanda
