Could metastasis in the liver present as NAFLD?

Could a high result on a liver function test indicate a spread of rectal cancer?

Could a slightly enlarged liver/ inflammation present on an ultrasound scan indicate liver metastasis?

And lastly, if an x-ray of the pelvic region was ordered after finding a large non-pedunculated polyp, what would the x-ray be able to indicate...would an xray show any sign of metastasis? Would it be able to indicate other tumours, effected lymph nodes?

Many thanks for your help.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry if you are going through different tests and I can understand how unsettling it can be.

The questions that you are ask are very specific but as a nurse and not involved in your care it is very difficult to give an opinion.

Often several tests are done to diagnose a condition and to help rule out a cancer. You mention NAFLD (Non fatty non alcoholic liver disease) which you can read about here

There are several different reasons for raised liver function tests and an ultrasound and perhaps a CT or PET scan would also help the doctors know more.

Sometimes a biopsy of the liver is needed if the doctors are keen to confirm a diagnosis.

Every patient is treated very individually so it is difficult for me to say what the appropriate tests are. If it is you or a relative involved then find out more from the treating doctor.

I can understand that it is frustrating waiting wondering what the next steps are so do ask the questions you are asking Cancer Chat to the doctors involved.

I do hope that you know more soon.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
