Leg swelling after lymph node biopsy

Hello,

I would like to seek advise please on how others recovered after lymph nodes biopsy in leg and if swelling went away or remained for life.

I have had a wide excision in anckle for Melanoma and lymph node biopsy in groin 3 months ago. Preliminary, I have had some swelling in anckle. Now I also have swelling in knee and thigh. I am wearing level  1 light compression tights but the difference in legs in 2 cm now.

Has anyone had similar experience? Did your swelling disappeared eventually? Or did it gradually progressed and worsened limiting your mobility?

Thank you so much in advance for guidance.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about the treatment you have had for melanoma and the swelling in your leg that is worrying you.

Hopefully others will jump in here and share their stories with you but do bear in mind everyone is different and just because something happened to one person doesn't mean the same will happen with you.

Most people will experience some initial swelling after surgery and lymph node biopsy and usually this will settle down and improve with time. However sometimes the lymphatic system is impaired due to the treatment and in turn this can cause lymphoedema here that will need long term management usually.

It is good to hear you have a compression stocking on but I have to say you may need to have this swelling reassessed and referred to the local lymphoedema service if your team agree this could be more permanent damage. Often a stronger class 2 or 3 stocking may be needed to help the excessive fluid out of the leg and also guidance given about good skin care, exercises and self lymphatic drainage massage techniques to help with this.

Try not worry too much lymphoedema can be well managed and most people are able to function normally whilst having lymphoedema but do get this looked at when you can.

Please get back if you have more questions. Our nurse helpline is open Monday-Friday 9-5 so do call us if you prefer.

    All the best
