Can rectal polyps join into one large mass?

Hi, I had my colonoscopy today and watched the process on screen. What I saw wasn't clearly defined polyps (like the ones I've Google but know I shouldn't) instead it was a quite large area that had a smooth but lumpy surface. It wasn't bleeding, it didn't look "scary"; just like a big section of my rectum had grown inward.

When the endoscopologist saw it he said to his nurse "that's it there".  They took three biopsies from it in different areas, but I just can't get it out of my head that it didn't look like a polyp/group of polyps. He's booked me in for a pelvic xray as he did a digital examination afterwards and felt a fullness that he couldn't identify and just wanted to get things fully checked out to be thorough.

I'm only 35 and have no direct family history of bowel cancer; I do have one auntie who had to have polyps removed. I'm trying to hold on to the likely-hood that this is a benign polyp.

I would like to know how likely this is, and also what is the procedure when removing a large polyp? Will they always remove a polyp if it is benign but causing symptoms? Could it be something else (if it was an area of inflammation then would it not be bleeding; I've had two quite big bleeds in past few months, but saw no sign of blood today?)

Thank you so much for your time.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I think it is all too tempting after having a procedure done to google what it could mean. I am sorry to say that unless you are a specialist doctor or nurse it would be very unlikely that you could interpret what you saw.

In most circumstances it is fair to say that all polyps would be removed or biopsied. If a polyp cannot be removed via colonoscopy then it might need to be removed surgically in a operation.  Not all polyps are cancer but some polyps might over time become cancer.

To answer your question I suppose that if polyps are close to each other when they grow that they might appear to merge into each other. But to be honest I am not too sure about this.

It is now all about waiting for the results of the colonoscopy, the results of the biopsies taken and having the pelvic x-ray done before you can understand what is or could be the matter. You are right at your age bowel cancer is an unlikely diagnosis.

I hope you have a better understanding of your situation soon. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,
